Are English White Labradors Purebred?

By Ben Tanner, Breeder at Rocky River Retrievers

If you’ve been swooning over the stunning, pale-coated pups known as English White Labradors, you might be wondering: Are they really purebred? It’s a fair question—and one I get all the time. So let’s dig in (pun intended).

🐾 The Truth About That Gorgeous White Coat

Despite the “white” in their name, English White Labs are actually yellow Labradors. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Labrador Retrievers come in three official colors: black, chocolate, and yellow. White Labs are simply on the very lightest end of the yellow spectrum—think of them as platinum blondes in the Lab world.

No funny business. No secret breeds. Just good ol’ genetics doing their thing.

🐶 So What’s With the “English” Label?

Great question! The term “English” doesn’t mean the dog’s got a British accent. It refers to a show-style or conformation-style Labrador. These Labs are typically:

  • Stockier in build
  • Have a broader head and chest
  • Known for a calm, gentle temperament

That’s different from “American” or field-style Labs, which tend to be leaner, longer-legged, and bred more for working or hunting.

So an “English White Lab” is really just a light yellow Lab with a show-style build. Both types are 100% Labrador Retriever.

🩺 What the Experts Say

Over the years, I’ve worked closely with veterinarians, professional groomers, and dog handlers. Their take? The coat color doesn’t affect whether a Lab is purebred. What matters is pedigree and adherence to breed standards.

If a Lab’s parents are AKC-registered and the dog meets the Labrador standard, then it’s a purebred Labrador Retriever, regardless of whether its coat is cream, gold, or that gorgeous snowy white.

And yes—groomers absolutely love the white Labs. They’re eye-catching, especially in photos, and their calm temperament makes grooming a breeze.

✅ Final Verdict: Are English White Labs Purebred?

Absolutely. 100%. No doubt about it.

Here at Rocky River Retrievers, all our English White Labs are AKC-registered Yellow Labs. They’re the real deal—loving, loyal, and irresistibly huggable. If you’re looking for a beautiful dog with a gentle soul and a rock-solid pedigree, you just found your match.
