Although not officially recognized as different breeds, the two kinds of Labrador do have differences that set them apart from one another. Both kinds of Labradors having ancestors from the respective nations, each raised for distinct purposes.
The English and American Labradors are distinguished by whether they were bred for show or hunting. Both kinds of Labrador are considered sociable, reliable, good-natured, playful, and like human interaction. They are well-liked as both companions and service dogs. Furthermore, the Labrador is primarily a retriever.
Labradors bred for show and conformation have been known as English type Labradors since they are far more popular in the United Kingdom. Because they are far more common in the United States, Labradors bred for field trials and hunting have been known as American-type Labradors.
However, there are American Labrador that competes in dog shows and English Labrador that competes in field trials and are used for hunting, which may be confusing. The phrases ‘American Labrador’ and ‘English Labrador’ are not set in stone, but rather a helpful indicator of the likely sort of Labrador being discussed, still, there are several exceptions.
When compared to an American Lab, the English Lab:
· Looks more solid with a heavier appearance. They’re blockier and larger, with barrel chests, and they’re significantly broader and more ‘solid’ appearing.
· Has a broader head with a more prominent and well-defined stop, a larger face, and a shorter snout, all of which contribute to their more solidly built look.
· Has a thicker and more powerful neck.
· It has a considerably thicker coat.
· Their tails are broader, thicker, and typically straighter than those of their American relatives.
· Has shorter legs and so does not stand as tall.
· Has a lower stature.
When compared to an English Lab, the American Lab:
· Has a lighter, leaner appearance. They appear nimbler and ‘ready to go with a more athletic physique, lithe and finer boned.
· Has a narrower head than their English counterparts. The English lab’s head and face are significantly smaller, and their muzzle is more streamlined and longer.
· Has slimmer and longer necks, which contributes to their more lithe and athletic appearance.
· The coat is significantly thinner.
· Generally, has a slimmer and less ‘otter-like tail than an English Lab. It seems longer, and some have a slight curve to them.
There are significant variations in appearance and temperament between ‘American type’ and ‘English type’ Labradors. So, which is the best one for you? That depends on your lifestyle and what you expect from your dog.
American Labradors are typically more athletic, active, and driven, and are better suited to an outside life of hunting and sports, or for families with a lot of energy and true outdoor types.
English type Labradors are blockier and larger in build, calmer, more submissive, and better suited for life as a family pet…but they are still an active breed. We breed for the mix of both so that they are well balanced.
