Labrador Retrievers and Their love for Water

Labrador retrievers love water. Labs were originally bred to help hunters in icy waters. Which may explain why your pup loves swimming and water today! Of course, to have a good relationship with water, it’s best to introduce them at a fairly young age. In this article, Rocky River Retrievers will go over instincts and features that help your pup to naturally enjoy water, introduce them to swimming safely, and more!

What features help Labradors be good swimmers?

Labrador Retrievers typically have an otter-like tail that can be used to propel them through the water. If you notice, they also have webbed feet which work like flippers to push them forward. Their dew claws originally helped Labradors grip the ice to make it out safely from their icy fishing excursions. They have thick coats of fur that keep them warm and allow less water in. All of these features help Labradors to be exceptional swimmers and hunters, as well as giving them the ability to do better in cold weather than many other dog breeds.

Hunting and fishing

Due to Labrador retriever’s naturally given instincts and qualities, they can be great dogs for hunting and fishing. As in their name, they were bred to be retrievers. These dogs have soft enough mouths to carry the game without causing damage to it. Labs excel in swimming. They are great at retrieving fowl or fish from the water. Their keen sense of smell also helps them to follow and retrieve from long distances.

Introducing your pup to new things

When raising a dog to be well-rounded, it is often best to introduce them to new things early on in life. When your dog is young it is easiest for them to pick up on new activities and become more comfortable and familiar with new things. This principle can be seen in socialization. When a dog meets lots of different types of people and frequently is introduced to many people from a young age, they are far more likely to be comfortable and open to being around people. The same thing goes for swimming!

Introducing a puppy to swimming

There are several steps to encourage your dog to be comfortable with swimming. We have another article about this with more information! Check it out here.

Life jackets, standing in the water with your pup, and other exposure techniques, while using safety precautions, are great ways to introduce a dog to swimming. Luckily their instincts, especially for Labrador retrievers, help it to be a more natural process as well.

Benefits of swimming with your pup

There are a lot of benefits that come from nurturing your puppy’s love for water and swimming. These benefits include increased joint health, mental stimulation, bonding and socialization, and more. regarding joint health: water reduces stress on the joints and muscles, it’s low impact, yet it allows for flexibility and exercise. It is a great form of exercise that helps to reduce the likelihood of arthritis or other joint issues. Mental stimulation also occurs while your dog navigates the water, obeys commands, and learns safety strategies. Swimming is also a great way for dogs to socialize and bond with their owners and other dogs. Not to mention swimming being a good activity for cooling off in the summer, it’s overall an enjoyable experience.

Safety Precautions

While labs are natural-born swimmers, even the best swimmers need safety measures. Emergencies and mistakes unfortunately happen, so it is crucial to take precautions to ensure the safety of your pup. For starters, never leave your dog unsupervised near water. Even strong swimmers can have accidents. Life jackets and floating devices are another good tactic to increase safety. Properly fitting life jackets are a great way to keep your dog safe. There are many types available online and in stores to protect your pet. Lastly, another key precaution is swimming lessons. While your dog may have natural inclinations to swim, it is always a good idea to be safe rather than sorry. Professional swimming lessons for dogs are available to strengthen their skills, especially for emergencies.
